Our Story
Marhaba, welcome to Alamir Bakery! Our family has been making authentic Lebanese food, right here in Wellington since 1992.
Alamir Bakery was founded by our parents Jamil and Waafa Dia and today is run by the second generation of the Dia family. As a family-owned and operated business, our mother Waafa still lends her expertise to the business she helped to create.
Our parents began the business of making small batches of hummus and falafel in a commercial kitchen out the back of our family home in Miramar. The decades that followed saw our grassroots operation turned into something far bigger than we ever imagined was possible.
In some ways it should have come as no surprise. Hummus wasn’t on supermarket shelves at that time, and we knew it was a flavour Kiwis would love. Our family recipes, some of which have been passed down for generations garnered much praise from those that tried them.
In 1992 ‘The Delicious Lebanese Snack Co Ltd,’ was born and our parents began distributing traditionally made Lebanese products to local supermarkets, restaurants, and cafes around Wellington.
In 2001 we opened ‘Alamir Bakery’ and began making traditional Lebanese pita bread and all types of Lebanese food; from kebby to pizzas to kebabs, in a small takeaway-style shop. With the bakery open, the feedback from our customers was consistent: Kiwis loved Lebanese food and great quality produce. With these two things in mind, we knew we could spread our natural-and-full-of-flavour “superfood” to everyone!
But first, we needed a bigger space. That’s when we moved to our current premises in the Miramar Metro. Slowly the product range grew to include all-natural flavoured hummus, falafel bites, falafel mix, pita bread, pita chips, tahini and tarator sauce.
‘The Delicious Lebanese Snack Co Ltd’ merged with ‘Alamir Bakery’. We are now one business providing the country with traditional Lebanese products, made with authentic ingredients right here in Wellington.
